Cola Turner:
Miss Cola Turner, the daughter of a doctor, came to Auburn with her
parents in 1910. She attended Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn., after graduating from
high school here.
She was the
eldest of five children born to Oda Ann Porter and Dr. Thomas Hamilton Turner.
On Sept. 1, 1925,
at thirty one years of age, she and her partner, Miss Cola Turner launched their business.
Miss Neal remembers her first customer, Mrs. Ollie Hutcheson, who bought a spool of thread.
Both Cola and
Irene were astute business partners and had a sharp eye for collecting antiques,
in addition to keeping up the many details of running a clothing store for men,
women and children, and operating a floral agency.
Along with her
many interests, Cola also found time to be correspondent for the News-Democrat
in Russellville, and the Auburn News. Miss Turner belongs to the first
Presbyterian.
Cola is buried
in the Auburn Cemetery, Section A, beside her mother and father and her two
sisters; Mary Edith Turner (1898-1918) and Dorothy Elsie Turner (1906-1919).
